History of Callaway County, Missouri

Callaway County, Missouri is located in the central part of the state and is named after Captain James Callaway who served during the War of 1812. The area that is now Callaway County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage Indians. In 1790s, French fur traders and trappers settled in what is now known as Callaway County. By 1806 the first permanent settlers had arrived in what would become Callaway County. The first settlers were primarily from Kentucky and Virginia who were attracted by fertile soil for farming and plentiful hunting grounds for game animals.

In 1820 Callaway County was officially formed from parts of Montgomery County and Boone County. It was named after Captain James Callaway who had served during the War of 1812. In 1821 Fulton was designated as county seat due to its location at a crossroads between St Louis and Jefferson City which made it an ideal location for commerce to flourish.
