Ductility refers to the property of those materials that, under the action of a force, can be deformed without breaking. These materials, such as certain metals or asphalts, are known as ductile. Instead, materials that do not possess this property are classified as brittle. Regarding its use, its flexibility before being destroyed is its most attractive aspect; a brittle material breaks without giving signs to its user, while in the case of ductile materials extreme torsion is observed, so that it would be impossible to break them by accident.

Ductile materials are often used especially in children’s products, seeking not only to increase the durability of objects but also to offer greater safety. Opposed to brittleness, ductility ensures that a very pronounced effort is necessary for the break to occur, and prevents the scattering into small fragments, dangerous mainly for children and pets, who tend to put everything in their mouths.
