The first settlers arrived in Dutchess County around 1683. Many of them were Dutch immigrants who moved up from Manhattan and established a number of small towns along the Hudson River. By 1710, Dutchess County was one of the five original counties in the Province of New York. During the American Revolution, Dutchess County was part of George Washington’s headquarters during the Siege of Boston and his headquarters for a time at Fishkill Supply Depot near present-day Beacon.
During the 19th century, Dutchess County developed into a major agricultural center with dairy farms, orchards, vineyards and Christmas tree farms dotting its landscape.
